The difference between a smooth walk and a frustrating one often comes down to what's under your feet. We've spent time on every trail in this section, testing surfaces with walkers, mobility aids, and different footwear. What we found? The best route for you depends on your specific needs.

Some trails have composite boardwalks that are forgiving and consistent. Others use recycled rubber with excellent grip. A few still have wooden surfaces that can shift seasonally. Handrails vary too — some run the entire length, others appear only on steep sections. And width matters. A 1.2-meter boardwalk feels different than a 1.8-meter one when you're using a walker or mobility device.

Boardwalk Surface Types Explained

We've identified four main surface types across ulmenra Park's accessible routes. Each has distinct characteristics that affect how they feel to walk on.

Composite Boardwalk

Made from recycled plastic and wood fibers. It's the most consistent surface you'll find. Doesn't splinter, maintains grip even when damp, and expands minimally with temperature changes. Most new sections use this. Width typically ranges from 1.2 to 1.8 meters.

Recycled Rubber Overlay

Applied over older wooden boardwalks to improve grip and longevity. Provides excellent traction in wet conditions. It's thicker than it looks — about 6-8mm — which creates a slight edge at transition points. Some people notice this edge; others don't.

Wooden Boardwalk

Original construction, still maintained on several heritage routes. Boards run perpendicular to the direction of travel, which some people find helps with grip. Can shift slightly with seasonal moisture changes. Most wooden sections have been recently sealed.

Asphalt Path

A few shorter connector routes use packed asphalt. Smooth and predictable, but offers less grip than boardwalks. Generally 1.5 to 2 meters wide. Best for people using wheeled devices or those who prefer a flatter, harder surface.

Handrails and Width: What You'll Actually Encounter

Handrails aren't universal, and that's intentional. Park designers balance accessibility with maintaining the natural feel of the forest. Here's what you need to know.

Handrail Coverage

Full-length handrails exist on three major routes: Maple Ridge Loop (both sides), Lookout Bench Trail (one side only), and the connector from the parking area. These give you continuous support. Other routes have partial railings — typically at steep sections or where there's a significant drop. Some people appreciate the freedom of open sections; others find them unsettling. It's worth knowing before you go.

Boardwalk Width

Widths vary from 1.2 meters (single walker comfortably, two people tight) to 1.8 meters (two people side-by-side, one person with mobility device easily). The narrowest sections are older wooden sections — typically 1.2 meters. Composite sections average 1.5 meters. If you're using a walker or mobility device, you'll want at least 1.3 meters for comfortable navigation.

Using a Walker

You'll want at least 1.3 meters of clear width. Composite boardwalk is your best bet — predictable surface, consistent grip. Maple Ridge Loop and the upper connector are your strongest options. Both have full-length railings on at least one side. Avoid the oldest wooden sections (Lookout Access Trail) unless you're comfortable with slight board shifts.

Using a Wheelchair or Scooter

Composite boardwalk is essential — smooth, no gaps, predictable. Width matters less since you're already on a stable platform. Main Maple Ridge Loop is ideal. Check for transition points where rubber overlay meets composite — there's a slight lip that won't stop you but you'll feel it. Asphalt paths (where available) offer the smoothest experience.

Preferring Stability and Grip

Recycled rubber overlay sections provide the best traction. These are mainly on updated older routes. If you like the grip of rubber but want handrail support, Lookout Bench Trail has both. Wooden sections offer natural grip due to board orientation, but they're narrower and have less consistent railings.

Wanting a Gentle, Open Experience

Upper connector paths and the eastern extension have minimal railings — just cables at drop-offs. Surfaces are composite (smooth and predictable). These routes feel less enclosed. Width is comfortable for solo walkers. You'll get the forest experience without constant handrail contact.

Practical Tips for Your Visit

Test a Short Section First

Don't commit to a full route on your first visit. Walk 200 meters in, check how the surface feels under your feet, test the handrails if present, and see how your body responds. You'll know immediately if it's right for you.

Check Recent Weather

Composite and rubber surfaces grip well when wet, but wooden sections can be slippery after rain or morning dew. Asphalt paths stay more predictable. If it's been damp, stick to the newer surface types or wait for conditions to dry.

Wear Shoes with Good Grip

Your footwear makes a real difference. Hiking shoes or trail runners with rubber soles grip composite and rubber surfaces well. Smooth-soled shoes (dress shoes, some sneakers) can slip. Canvas shoes sit somewhere in the middle. Test your usual footwear on a short section before a longer walk.

Bring a Friend or Tell Someone

Walking with someone else is more enjoyable and safer. If you're going alone, tell someone your route and expected return time. Most trails have cell coverage, but it's good to have a backup plan.

Know Where the Benches Are

Nearly every accessible route has benches positioned at natural rest points — usually every 200-300 meters. Don't hesitate to use them. Take breaks before you feel exhausted, not after. This makes the whole experience better.
